I had an AMAZING idea this morning, ZOMG!!!!! So excited!!! *happy dance* It came in the form of a dream, so see? Ideas come to you when you lest expect them too.
I will return you to your regularly scheduled blog series tomorrow. Until then, enjoy Five for Friday.
Time to own up to some things that I like, probably too much:
1. Disaster movies. Wow. I love these movies (and books, but I haven’t found a whole lot of them). Something about wiping away most of the world’s population, and a rag-tag band of heroes are suddenly thrown into a harsh world where the only the strong survive, where everything they took for granted is GONE, BABY GONE really gets my blood going. Don’t know why. And it doesn’t matter how terrible the move is either, I will still watch it. And yes, Zombie movies fall into this category for me.
Examples: Movies: The Day After Tomorrow, Deep Impact, Doomsday, Mad Max Trilogy, Waterworld
Books: The Stand by Stephen King, Cell by Stephen King, The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks
2. 80’s Hair band. I love them. I don’t know why, but every time a hair metal song comes on, I just feel the urge to jump up and sing, even if I am in the grocery store. I LOVE Journey, which may or may not be considered a hair band, but I enjoy even the really cheesy bands. I think it’s the melodrama in the songs…let’s not read too much into what that says about my character, okay? ‘Kay.
Example: Def Leopard (I love all of their songs), Every Rose Has It’s Torn by Poison, Here I Go Again on My Own by Whitesnake, Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung, Tarzan Boy by Balitmora, To Be With You by Mr. Big, Radar Love by Golden Earring, Van Halen, Reo Speedwagon (OHHH, especially the Power ballads! I love me some power ballads!)
Disclaimer: While some bands made music during the 80’s, like Meat Load, they were not just popular during the 80’s, so that’s why some awesome bands aren’t on this list.
3. Pop music. Sorta goes with the 80’s music, but it’s different (and shameful enough) to get it’s own space. Now, if you love pop music, please don’t think I am making fun of you, because I am not. After all, I LOVE pop music, but there are some songs that could be…a little deeper, shall we say. Even the really repetitious pop songs don’t bother me. I like Lady Gaga, and grew up on the boy bands so I love most of those, girl bands, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, yes, there’s even a few Miley Cyrus songs I like. I just love the happy, upbeat nature of most pop songs. I don’t like EVERY pop song, but I like enough of them. Let’s just say I listen to a little bit of everything, for reals: Abba, Disturbed, Def Leopard, Hanson, David Garret, Beethoven, Sarah Brightman, Guns and Roses, and VNV nation are all in my itunes, and loads more.
4. I love to smell and touch my books. I love lining them on the shelf and just run my fingers tips over the spines, breathing in the scent of reading. This brings me great joy; I don’t know why. Especially buying a new book! I love going through the book store, pursing through the aisles, selecting a book (or two), and bringing my finds up to the cashier like a new mom.
5. Blades of Glory. Yes, that comedy with Will Farell and Jon Heder in it, about male figure skaters. Normally, I don’t find movies of the stupid-silly variety funny. It’s just me, you may think they are hilarious. So when it came time to clean the house, I needed a movie to pop in, one that I didn’t have to pay a lot of attention to. It’s mostly a distraction against the utter mindless boredom that which is cleaning. So! I put the movie in (borrowed from my little brother, who LOVES movies like that), and was surprised as to how hard I am laughing. Maybe it’s because I was expecting the movie to suck. Maybe it’s because I was under loads of stress and needed something bright and shiny to take my mind off things. For whatever reason, I really find this movie hysterical, and not just a scene or two. My favorite parts are when Jon Heder has to eat the dirty (not used-dirty, dirty from trash and stuff) toilet paper (so gross it went right past my gag reflex and straight to my funny bone), and when Will Farell says he could never love a human baby more than his horse hair brush. Good times, good times.
Honorary Mention: CHOCOLATE!!!
I was going to include chocolate, but I don’t feel guilty for loving it, so…

Five for Friday: Disgusting Stuff
Happy Friday everyone!
Theme: Really Disgusting Stuff
1. Milk Crust: that crust that forms around the cap of the milk jug? Yeah, that’s disgusting. Milk should never be in a solid form. Am I the only one whose stomach turns when I see that?
2. Water beetles: not the water spiders, those guys are okay. I am talking about water beetles. They look like cockroaches, but they like to live in the shower, and give me a rude awakening in the morning. One evening while I was still in high school, I stayed up late working on an English paper (yes, I was a nerd in high school, how did you guess?). I decided to take my shower that night so I could sleep in a few more seconds. To my disgust, when I walked into the bathroom, there was a large water beetle hanging out on the side of the shower. Like the strong-willed, headstrong female I am, I did what was best: I called in my twin brother to squash it. He brought his boot in (after rolling his eyes at me) and tried to hit the bug. It skittered away, and he hit the hot water faucet instead. Apparently the faucet was old, because the handle fell off, and water shot out to the other end of the shower. We grabbed the handle quickly and replaced it, and then looked at each other, silently wondering what to do. It was about that time that Mom came into the bathroom, going on about how much noise we were making, and we were going to wake up our father, and did we know how late it was, and what were we doing? We looked at each other, shrugged, and my twin let go of the handle. Water shot across the shower again. Mom simply said, “I’ll get your father.”
**For the record, I don’t think it’s okay to just squash every bug in sight, and I believe all life is sacred. And I am not afraid of all bugs, just the freakishly large, nasty water beetle ones.
3. Mold: when you haven’t realized the corn muffins are growing mold, heat it up in the microwave, put butter on it, and take a big bite. It tastes a little funny, but hey, you just woke up so maybe your taste buds aren’t awake yet. Two bites later you see the mold, and feel like you’re going to hurl. What’s a little extra penicillin, right?
4. Spam Juice: that whitish juice looking fluid in canned meat, like Spam. As if the meat didn’t already look gross as it is, the processed meat is packaged in some sort of juice. Gross.
5. Soap scum: the scum that accumulates in the shower. I have very long hair, so I have to pick it out of the drain, and usually get a good view of the soap scum before I spray it with cleaner.
And that concludes today’s Five for Friday. Kinda gross, I know, but I find it useful for description if I throw something “real” into the book every once in awhile. Try to become a vigilant observer of life; how people look, smell, how they talk, the fine detail in the rooms around. Even just a few details will make your novel come to life.

Five for Friday
Every Friday I shall post five things I’d like to share. Sometimes there will be a theme, sometimes not.
Five things I would like you to know, just in case you were wondering:
1. I have recently painted my toenails “Nuclear Ruby” by Sation. I always have to have my toenails painted; they look terrible without some sort of color. In the winter I stick to dark shades of red, purple, and sometimes even blue. But in the summer, all bets are off and I search for the most obnoxious shade of hot pink or orange or green I can, since it’s the only time of the year I can get away with it, because I am PALE…white-pale. 99%-Irish-ancestry-pale. I sunburn in less than ten minutes, no exaggeration.
2. There is nothing like taking a hot shower in the morning. Something about the hot water and the steam…it’s pure heaven.
3. I have a slight obsession with various things, but most of them relate to food and body care products, like lotion and shower gel. I will go through phases where I love a certain type of food, and eat it for weeks straight. My current food obsession? Crunchy Cheetos. Man, are those things DELICIOUS!
4. I have a highly sensitive sense of smell. This relates back to the body care products thing in number three. I have a lot of lotion, shower gels, body sprays, and candles. Working part time at Bath and Body Works only reinforced this obsession. I think smell is underused in writing, and I tend to focus on it a little more than I notice most authors doing.
5. The birds, specifically around here, are really fat. I am not talking about when they puff their feathers up, either. I mean, this robins flying around here break the laws of aerodynamics. I saw one the other day that looked like a red baseball with a tiny head on the top. I shall have to carry my camera around with me, and capture evidence of this.
I hope everyone has a great Friday! Feel free to share anything about yourself you thought I would like to know (and I do want to know. People are fascinating!)
